Grants may be awarded for projects with industrial relevance and that demonstrate high standards of independent scientific quality (not product development nor patents) and fall within the Foundation’s prioritised areas. The Foundation primarily funds research projects but may also support symposia/conferences and the establishment of new professorships.

The budget for a research project should not exceed SEK 2 million. Co-financing from other funding bodies is encouraged, but not necessarily. Applications may be written in either Swedish or English. Indirect costs may be included in the budget. Often approved project has a duration of more than one year. Normally it is assumed that the research project starts the year after a granted application, and normally they last for one to three years. The Foundation does not use a standard template or specific forms for the application, which should be sent to the Foundation with an e-mail. However, a research application must include a compiled (1) appendix to the e-mail, in Word max. 2.5 MB, with the following headings and content:

Project Description
Title, summary, background, research questions, objectives, expected results, timeline – incl. start time, and end time – and budget in SEK, and with clear indication of any OH.

Participants

Project leader, key personnel, and collaborators. Specify if the project leader is another person than the main applicant (name all main actors with titles).

Contact Details and CV
Maximum one page (to/for the main applicant) incl. postal address, e-mail address and phone number. If it is decided that another person, than the applicant will be project leader for the project, a CV (and contact details) also for that person should be included.

The e-mail should contain: Who is the applicant (full address, including the university name to the main applicant), project title, along with specified connection(s) to one or more of the Foundation’s priority areas, and the total amount requested.

It is assumed that the approved research project can actually be conducted at the applicant’s university, but no certificate of this is required.

Applications must be submitted electronically to the Secretary and received to the Foundation no later than September 30. The Research Council holds its annual decision meeting at the end of November, with decisions announced in December.
